Widget Jackson, Part 1 of a Short Story in 2 Parts

dontravis.com blog post #530

Hope everyone had a good and safe Christmas. Thanks for your comments on Happy the Elf.

Today, let's get the first part of a tale about a youth with the unfortunate name of Widget--Widget Jackson--and see how his name influenced his story. Enjoy.

 ****

WIDGET JACKSON

Who names a kid Widget? My hippie parents, that’s who. At least they were hippies when I came along. Since then, they’ve become more mainstream… a little stuffy even but, you know, respectable. They moved on, but they left me indelibly marked by their former hippieness… that name. Most of the kids end up calling me Widge. But I answer to Widget, Widge, or Jackson. I blamed my odd first name for the way I turned out. Odd. As in gay, queer, or whatever label you want to put to it.

I don’t have a problem with that. Well, I do on occasion, but not a major one. My big problem is named Roger. Roger Redding, to be precise. You see, I’m hung up on the guy in a serious way, and I doubt I even register on his radar… much less gaydar, if he has any. Probably doesn’t know my name. Well, in a town this size, he knows that much about me but not much more. You see, he’s physical—as in jock—while I’m more mental. Don’t get me wrong, he’s bright enough, but his tastes run more to footballs, basketballs, baseballs, and the like, while mine seem to center on his.

Come to think of it, he had three names too… at least for me. Roger the Handsome, Roger the Sexy, and Roger the Unapproachable. All spot on. Some good-looking guys are bland, you know, pleasing to look at but don’t raise the blood pressure. And we’ve all known plain looking guys who get under your skin, stir the blood. Roger’s one of those spectacularly handsome youths who make you think of the bedroom or the back seat of a car or the local men’s room or anywhere you can be alone with him. I would be alone with him in the middle of a crowd if he wanted me to.

Then came the glorious day that Roger the Magnificent’s car broke down. I know that’s an odd way to put it, but that’s me… odd. One Sunday afternoon, I was on the way back from the lake after some alone time along the shore during summer break when I rounded a curve in my old Rambler and saw a car with the hood up. I recognized that Chevy Impala. It was Roger’s. His old man had bought a new one last year and gave the old one to his son. Relying on an ancient Rambler for transportation necessitated that I be handy with a wrench. Accordingly, I pulled up behind the Impala and parked. As I got out of the car, I saw the unbelievably handsome head of Roger the Faultless look around the car. A spot of dirty oil had the temerity to mar his flawless forehead. But even that looked rakish on him.

“Trouble?” I asked.

“Hi, Jackson. You know anything about car engines?”

Wow! He did know my name, at least my family name. “Enough to keep this old Rambler running. What’s the problem?”

He swiped his forehead with a muscular forearm, smearing the smudge. “Damned if I know.”

“Mind if I take a look?”

“Be my guest.”

Crap, why couldn’t I come up with suave comments like that? Obediently, I stuck my head under the hood, but my first good look was at his lower extremities since my eyes were hidden from his gaze. Nothing wrong with what I saw.

I recovered my senses, and started tracing and testing wires from here to there like I did on my rambler. Of course, the Impala was different… it was ruled by computers while my Rambler didn’t even know what one was.

“Get in and try to start it,” I said in as manly and masterful a voice as I could manage.

Obeying my instructions—imagine that paragon of macho following my instructions—he crawled in and made it easy for me. The starter dragged for a few seconds and then went to clicking.

“You been having trouble starting the car?” I asked.

“Yeah, it’s been a little balky.”

“Your starter’s gone.” I frowned. “Did the car die on you while you were driving?”

He dropped his gaze. “Uh… naw. I pulled over to take a leak.”

Oh my lord! A few minutes earlier, and I might have been able to behold that awesome sight.

“And then it wouldn’t start.”

“Right.”

“I can give you a lift to the auto parts store.”

“Thanks, but what do I do then? Maybe I oughta call for a tow.”

“I can probably install it for you.”

“For real? Thanks, man.”

Man! He called me a man. Well, probably not. Just a jock term of address.

Shortly thereafter, Roger’s shapely butt was planted in my driver’s side seat as we headed to town. I might not let anyone else sit in that seat ever.

At the auto parts store, we waited while a man fussed around in a big book before poking on his computer for a few minutes. Then he walked away and came back holding a Chevy Impala starter in a box. Roger whipped out a credit card—imagine that, a credit card of his own—and we were on our way back to the stalled car.

“Don’t you need tools?” he asked.

I liked it when he looked at me… gave me substance.

I nodded to the back of the Rambler. “Every tool I own’s back there.”

Once we reached his crippled car, I dragged out my toolbox and went to work. For an hour I felt like the king of the world. Roger the Handsome snapped to, handing me this tool or that one on order. And he stood close, watching what I did, which gave me a dozen—a hundred—satisfying glances at his buffed form… his buffed lower form.

That was the shortest hour of my lifetime. Long before I was ready, the starter was in place, he fired the engine, and it caught. Purring like it was rearing to go.

He got out of the Impala as I slammed the hood. His broad smile turned my knees watery.

“You’ve got magic in your fingers, Widge.” He did know my name. “What do I owe you?”

I held up my hands. “Nothing.”

“Aw, come on. It would have cost me a fortune.”

I shook my head. “I don’t want your money, Roger.”

 ****

Jeez, I feel for the guy. Have you ever worshiped someone from afar, especially as a youth? It can be excruciating, can’t it? Well, Widge has his foot in the door now. Let’s see next week if he can wedge something else in, as well.

 Until next week.

 Stay safe and stay strong.

Now my mantra: Keep on reading and keep on writing. You have something to say… so say it!

The Prescient - Installment 4

dontravis.com blog post #403

Readers from Hong Kong led the pack again last week, and surprisingly readers from Russia came in second. We readers from the US fell to third place. Unusual.

Tancready endured a painful day, even though he sought the shade of the forests on Sandia Mountain, only to have the subject of his lust eventually discern his intentions and flee into the night. Using his own mode of transportation (not not on bat wings) he follows Boris back to UNM. Now let’s see what happens.

THE PRESCIENT

Using that other dimension, I easily reached the campus ahead of Boris. From a place of concealment, I observed him pull into a parking spot and crawl out of the Jeep. Slowly, as if totally exhausted, he trudged toward the buildings, passing his dormitory and making for the Duck Pond to claim the bench where we had played chess. He sat down heavily.

Cautiously, I drew near, but his psychic energy flared. He glanced around warily as I eased back into the shadows. Even from afar, I observed the erection trapped between his leg and the denim of his trousers. He sat with his chin on his chest while his blood subsided and the goose bumps that puckered his flesh faded away. He was as frightened as he had ever been in his short lifetime, but he had not yet divined his true fear. He perceived his present agitation as merely a challenge to his manhood by a pervert. I wondered when he would truly understand. Finally, he rose and walked directly to his dorm.

Craving Boris more desperately than ever, I found a rowdy bar and fed my ravenous appetite by absorbing the frantic energy flooding the place. When the tavern closed, I roamed the night until I chanced upon a youth hurrying through an alley. My dark psychic energy brought him to a halt. He was an Indian in his late teens, good-looking, innocent. I took his seed while he stood frozen against an adobe wall in the darkness. Then, ignoring his terrified, soulful eyes, I threw him to the ground and ravished him the way I so ardently desired to ravish Boris. Still not sated, I licked the smooth, pulsing neck and drew blood for the first time in a century. I left him lying half-naked and weakened, but alive in that silent alleyway. His body would heal; I closed my mind to any other damage that may have been inflicted.

Boris showed up Friday evening. Expecting such an event, I had not closed my gate against the world for the past few nights. I opened the door and expressed false surprise.

“Tancready,” he said, nervously shifting from one foot to the other. “I came to apologize for the other night.”

“That is kind of you, Boris. Won’t you put the incident from your mind and come in?” His internal struggle was obvious as he stepped over the sill. I snapped on a small, weak lamp for his convenience.

“That’s the problem. I can’t forget.”

“Because you are curious?” I suggested gently, releasing the tight rein I held on my energy. He nodded uncertainly as an orange tendril caressed his handsome face. “Have you had any experience with a man?” He shook his head, his torso now engulfed. “But you wonder what it would be like.” I made it a statement.

“I don’t know. Maybe.” He licked his lips nervously. I recognized his urge to flee … and his inability. “How did the prints come out?”

“Boris,” I said, releasing my sexual energy to go where it would. “Forget the prints, at least for the moment. This needs to be dealt with.”

“H…how?” he stammered, even as he reluctantly submitted to my will and slowly approached. “Damn, Tancready! What am I doing? What are we doing? Why can’t I stop myself? Why—”

I cut off his words with a kiss. He resisted momentarily, and then surrendered those rosy lips. His reluctant tongue entwined with mine. With that kiss, I fed my pyranic energy, indulging my long-suppressed desire for this young Leandro.

I took a moment to drink in his masculinity. The boy’s curly hair had a fetching, careless look, flowing down into sideburns that ended in a point, like a child’s that had never felt the bite of a razor. Huge, magnetic eyes; wide, expressive mouth; skin without blemish and glowing with health and the vitality of youth dominated his features.

He stood rooted to the spot as I slowly removed his shirt. With wry amusement, I noted a thin chain around his neck, a tiny gold cross he had instinctively worn as protection. I concluded that perhaps he was consciously or unconsciously edging toward an understanding of the situation. When I touched the small Christian symbol without alarm, his defenses shattered.

I stroked the broad shoulders and ran my hands across his smooth hairless chest. Gently drawing him into my arms, I smoothed his horripilate flesh with my palms. His belly fluttered from excitement or fear; probably a bit of both. I traced the V of his back to the

belt line. Holding him helpless in my aura, I freed him of his clothing. The sight of his naked loins deprived me of the last of my control. He was as perfect as I had imagined, masculine, physically powerful, yet totally vulnerable; frightened of a carnal encounter with a man yet anticipating it. His psychic energy flared with every color in the spectrum. Fear, loathing, desire, anticipation, disgust, lust. Wild with my need, I tasted his throbbing flesh. Boris writhed at my touch, doing battle with carnal desire and instinctive panic. Each was an aphrodisiac to me. When his time neared, he lost the will to resist and moved his hips, slowly at first and then with all the power of those sturdy thighs and gifted me with his essence. It was as potent as I knew it would be. My energy level soared! My strength surged! My awareness became so hyper it was almost unendurable. I shared the ecstasy of his ejaculation, knowing he had experienced what few ever achieve…the love of a Vampire.

He lay exhausted on the thick carpet while I rested my head on his breast, glorying in his soft breath against my cheek. Rising to his side, I explored his features to fully understand the beauty of this extraordinary young man. I covered him with the cloak of my love, the aura of my friendship, the whole of my devotion!

A mistake! Too much, too soon. He scrambled to his feet and, without pausing to dress, clutched his clothes to his breast and ran naked to his Jeep. Sated and overloaded with energy, I turned sullen and morose.

*****

It seems that Boris was caught in Tancready’s web, allowing the vampire to taste his ambrosia. But did Tancready ruin it all by being unable to control himself? We already know Boris is sensitive to Tancready’s aura and mayhap throwing a cloak of love over the boy was too much too soon. At any rate, Boris bolted into the night once again… this time naked and clutching his clothing in his arms.

Ah, next week… what will happen?

The Prescient - Installment 3

dontravis.com blog post #402

I have no idea why, but readers from Hong Kong are lapping up this story. Welcome, friends.

Courtesy of publicdomainpictures.net
Tancready and the object of his desire, the beautiful Boris, have met over an ancient, ornate chessboard at the UNM duck pond and have discovered a mutual interest in photography. Tancready has lured Boris into a photo shoot on Sandia Mountain the next day. How can that happen? Aren't vampires creatures of the night?

*****

THE PRESCIENT

Returning to my home, I ate voracious amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables, another source of energy, and then retired to my bedchamber. I slept soundly, but awoke after sundown, hungry and restless again.
I returned to the university and prowled the night until I found young Boris beneath the blinding lights of the campus tennis courts doing battle with the young woman who had accompanied him last night. They played at playing, obviously enjoying one another’s company, which sent me into a sudden fit of unbridled jealousy. My halo flared dangerously. Worse, his aura blazed in unconscious response. He sensed a presence…my presence.
In the grip of a deep melancholy, I withdrew and chanced upon a blond student retiring from the courts. Embroiling this hapless substitute in reds and yellows, I overpowered the youth quickly and pulled him into a darkened recess. After licking the sweat of recent exercise from his exposed belly, I quickly coaxed the seed from him. Barely in control of my senses because of hunger and lust and jaundiced envy, I entered the towhead and ravaged him brutally while watching the distant, manly grace of Boris Balint.
#
I roused myself the following morning with difficulty. Despite the excitement of my coming time with Boris, I was reluctant to expose myself to the dreadful sunburn and excruciating headaches an all-day excursion necessarily entailed. Nonetheless, it was necessary. The prospect depressed me so deeply that I was only able to function by concentrating on my approaching proximity to the delectable Boris. Briefly, I wondered why I did not simply overwhelm the boy and take what I wanted, as with the Hispanic and the towhead and countless others, but something within me cautioned against rashness. This prize was unique in both physical sensuality and an innate sensitivity to the unusual.
And that brought me face-to-face with a potential problem I had sought unsuccessfully to ignore. As I gathered the equipment and awaited the boy’s arrival, I considered the unease that was twin to my pleasure in his exciting presence. The youth was extraordinarily aware of me. For all the studied casualness of one of his age, his halo betrayed his true, perhaps unconscious feelings. There were, of course, individuals who were quite perceptive when it came to Eternals, although they would be rare in this part of the Western Hemisphere, given its lack of such lore. Dhampires, sons of Vampires, existed, of course, and were attuned to our rhythms. That would present no particular problem, but there was a sensitive of another sort, presenting another problem.
Was it possible Boris was a Prescient? Mortals with an uncanny sensitivity to Eternals, Prescients are sometimes dangerous since many are Betrayers, or worse, Slayers. Over the ages, I have known many Prescients, some of whom, the ignorant, fled in terror. Others, more enlightened, provided many hours of pleasant company. One, a delightful woman of lush body and bright mind was a constant companion in a long-ago lifetime. She occupied my mind and body as few have done over the centuries…a role I envisioned for Boris in this one. Those were my blood days, and Sara willingly presented her veins to me when my hunger became truly demanding … without ill effect, I might add. Even today, I speculate on her given name, Sara, the Gypsy version of the black goddess Kali.
A few Prescients have betrayed me into the hands of enraged, terrified mortals, who are the deadliest and most bloodthirsty of all creatures, and a small number have sought my doom. These I dealt with as brutally as Vlad dispatched his enemies.
Boris’s bloodlines allowed for this possibility, but his family had been in the New World for generations with no exposure to my kind. Yet, his aura clearly showed he was unusually receptive to my mere presence. That did not necessarily mean he knew the why or the what of his apprehension. Shrugging away my usual caution, I completed preparations for our outing, thereby laying bare the depth of my need. My hunger for the boy was both natural and unnatural; natural in craving his pyranic energy, his semen, and unnatural in a lust that was overwhelmingly sensual, a different thing altogether.
At the appointed hour, his white Jeep appeared before my closed gate, and I threw the lever to admit him. Carefully placing our equipment atop an old tent he carried in the back, I was pleased to note he drove an enclosed vehicle, which would ease my exposure to the sun. I had agreed to allow him to provide the conveyance, suspecting this would satisfy his masculine code of etiquette.
We elected to explore the Bosque, a unique hundred-mile swath of cottonwoods lining both sides of the Rio Grande, an ecological treasure sentenced to a slow death once a system of dams put an end to the annual flooding of the river that was required to nurture seedlings. The once mighty Rio Grande now trickled through a narrow channel that wandered willy-nilly in its wide, sandy bed.
Boris took to the Leica Minilux like a born photographer. It fit his hand and eye perfectly. He shot images of driftwood on white sand, river birds in flight, an ancient turtle sunning on a semi-submerged log, and even a reclusive red fox. He rolled up his pant legs to reveal strong calves lightly brushed with fine brown hair and waded the river, cavorting like a boy. His aura ran wild with joy and budding friendship. He grew so comfortable that he dared tease me about the abundance of clothing covering me from head to foot on this warm, autumn day. I explained it for what it was, the protection of sensitive skin against the brutal sun. He had no such constraints. He tore off his shirt, baring his broad, muscled chest to my famished gaze. I briefly lost control and sopped up his radiations, but recovered before any damage occurred.
My desirable young companion had a commitment that night, so we made arrangements to meet the following morning for a quick trip to the mountains before developing our film in my darkroom. Once he was gone, I applied ointments and unguents to my poor flesh and retired.
In the dark of night, I rose and prowled the alleyways behind the bars on East Central, locating a man whose aura showed no trace of disease. I took his cum while he swore and sang drunkenly until the shock of his extraordinary climax silenced him.
#
The lush conifer forest on the east side of Sandia Mountain, a ten-thousand-foot peak directly east of Albuquerque that the local Indians called Sleeping Turtle, was less harsh on my system, and the boy’s growing amity made the effort worthwhile. He was an odd combination of venturesome youth, childish juvenile, and mature man. His company delighted me even as it aggravated my lust. It was not merely his physical presence that kindled me, but his mind and spirit, as well. We discussed the great photographers. He was much taken with Ansel Adams and Ernest Haas but agreed that Dmitri Kessel’s powerful plates of the ornate Benedictine church at Zwiefalten, Germany placed him among the elite. With difficulty, I stopped short of boasting that I had served as a seminarian at that magnificent structure in another lifetime.
We stood for long intervals and listened to the forest speak while I fought a raging battle to control my impatience for him. Boris blundered upon a black bear rooting for acorns, disturbed grazing mule deer, and photographed a magnificent golden eagle. We ascended Sandia Crest, named for the watermelon pink hue the autumn sun gave its western face at sunset, to cast our eyes west over the broad Rio Grande Valley to Mt. Taylor, one of the Navajo’s four sacred peaks. At a turnout lower on the mountainside we gazed north to Santa Fe hidden in the foothills of the towering Sangre de Cristos…a beautiful name, Blood of Christ! With that thought, I hungrily observed the vein pulsing in the boy’s neck as he snapped a picture. I wanted him so badly that I achieved an erection, something I rarely do until it is required. Sexual energy escaped my control, lapping against him in mauve waves of desire.
He dropped the camera from his eye and faced me. From the sudden flare of warning red, I saw he was alarmed. His mood changed dramatically; Boris was more thoughtful and less gregarious on our return trip despite my attempt to keep a conversation going.
The boy was quite skilled in the darkroom. Devoting our attention to this task, we labored into the night. Prolonged proximity to his sculpted body taxed my control to the limit. Waiting for our prints to dry, I hovered near him and carelessly sent a wave of desire up his back, retreating when his aura flared. But the damage was done. Boris turned to me, his color heightened by the crimson of the developing lamp. He licked his lips.
“Y…you’re a homosexual, aren’t you?” The tone was wary.
“I have lain with men,” I answered rather pompously.
“That’s what you want with me, isn’t it?” he rasped; his energy flaring alarmingly. “You want in my pants!”
“That is crude, Boris.”
“Oh, hell! You do! You want to…do things to me. No way, Tancready! I don’t go for that stuff. I like my girl. We make love. Oh, man, I knew something wasn’t right about this. Shit!” he cursed, tearing off the protective apron I had given him for working with the darkroom chemicals. Without another word, he slammed out of the room. I caught up with him in the hallway.
“I gotta go now. Early class tomorrow,” he babbled.
“Your prints, Boris! Your photographs?”
“I don’t know,” he waved a hand in the air. “Maybe I’ll come get them later.”
The boy fled into the night. I sadly opened the gate by remote control as his vehicle raced down the long drive. The house was lonely and oppressive once he was gone. My black mood turned into rage. They made love, did they? He and that… that girl! A bottomless jealousy tinted the room an iridescent green, overpowering even my anger. Straightening things in the darkroom and pulling prints from the dryer, I considered removing my competition. It would be easy enough. I could sate my newly awakened blood lust, turning it into a deadly feast. By a narrow margin, reason prevailed over impetuosity. The female creature’s demise, especially in such a manner, would excite unwelcome attention, not only from Boris, but also from the authorities. Such a disastrous end to a magnificent, albeit a taxing day! Abruptly, I abandoned the house.

*****

So we now know what a Prescient is. But is Boris Balint one of them? If so, will he nurture or threaten Tancready? It might not matter, because Boris fled Tancready’s house upon learning the vampire had a lust for him. Upset, Tancready leaves his home after Boris fled. Where will he go? How will he get there? What will he do? Has his frustration made him dangerous?

Next week… more Tancready.

The Drama Club-Part 3 (The Chameleon-Episode 2 of 3 Episodes)

dontravis.com blog post #384

Courtesy of Needpix.com
I’m willing to wager Jarrod’s found the guy he wants, but has he made a mistake? Bret’s a song and dance man, but he seems to be straight. Let’s see what happens this week.

*****
THE DRAMA CLUB
Part 3: THE CHAMELEON (Espsode 2)

Jarrod was satisfied with his modifications to the lighting by the time try-outs came around. He had one iron-clad rule, he never used his lights to try and influence Ms. Atherton for or against anyone; he did the best for every would-be actor who trod those boards. As Thes hall slowly filled, Jarrod discovered that Ms. Atherton wasn’t completely loony. She’d located some pretty decent talent among the music classes and choruses on campus.
Brett auditioned for the leading male role and did a good job. He had a pleasing tenor that was clear and true. He didn’t hit one false note in the song he auditioned, one of the hardest numbers in the play. There was another tenor who was as good as he was, but no one could touch Brett when it came to dancing.
After auditions were over, Jarrod sat in his easy chair and watched the stage slowly clear. Man, he’d have to be on his toes for this one. Most of the time, he set the lighting for a scene and that was that. Not so, on this one. He began to get excited over the prospect.
He heard Brett hit the bottom rung of the ladder. “How’d I do?” he asked when he emerged onto the platform.
“Dead heat singing. Blew them away dancing.”
“So what do you think?”
“Atherton’s got one problem,” Jarrod said. “Does she pick the best male lead or one that’s more on a par with the female lead? If there was a girl as good as you, she’d snap you up in a minute. It’s probably going to be Miriam, and she’s no clumsy ox, but she’s not up to your speed either.”
Brett frowned, something he did very handsomely. “Makes sense. Well, we’ll have to see.”
“Can you teach her?”
“Sure. I think she could be pretty good.”
“You willing to put in some extra time with Miriam?”
“You bet! And I’ve got rhythm tonight. Let’s dance! At any rate, let’s start teaching you,” Brett added. “Only problem is you’ll learn backwards. Well, I guess I could switch,” he seemed to be talking to himself, leaving Jarrod wondering what the hell he meant. He found out when Brett turned on his tape deck and found some music he liked. “Two-step. Basic. Come on! Let’s dance!”
Jarrod was awkward and reticent, but he soon found himself enchanted with the idea of dancing with this hunky guy. He liked the way their legs touched and enjoyed the feel of Brett’s strong grip on his hand and arm across his shoulders. When he’d trip on his own feet, they’d end up groin to groin.
“Okay,” Brett said after a few minutes, “now I’ll be the woman.” They did some sort of switch and Jarrod found himself leading… sort of. After awhile, he wasn’t doing all that badly, and they were dancing closer, more naturally.
A slow blues number came on, and Brett switched again so that he was back in charge. “Ah, this kind of song in a dark club with your gal so close there’s nothing between you…it’s heaven!” He pulled Jarrod hard against him. Their noses almost touched, and Jarrod looked into the most amazing eyes he’d even seen. Hazel, but they weren’t. They were blue green with a myriad of other colors in the iris…brown and black and gray. How had he not noticed them before?
“And when it gets late and you’re a little loose from the booze, it gets like this,” Brett said, pulling Jarrod’s head to his shoulder. He released Jarrod’s hand and put both arms around him, guiding them with his hips. Jarrod could feel the heat of Bret’s groin against him. In spite of himself, he began to react. The music wailed on, and Jarrod found his hands crossed behind the other boy’s back at waist level. They shuffled slowly, the music weaving a spell over them. Jarrod’s hands moved lower. Boldly, he put them on the boy’s buttocks, pressing their groins even tighter. Brett said nothing, simply continued to sway with the music.
The song died in a long, sad note, and Brett roused himself from its trance, stepping away suddenly and smiling ruefully. “I-I get carried away sometimes. Sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jarrod forced the words through a tight throat.
Silently acknowledging it was an awkward moment, Brett snapped off the tape deck and made his excuses. Before leaving, he grasped the rope Jarrod used more often than not to come and leave the loft.
“Might as well learn to come and go like you do.”
Jarrod moved quickly, staying him with a hand on his arm. “You learn to go up first. Then you can go down.”
“Oh. Thanks. Wouldn’t want to break a leg for real and give it to Blue Balls by default, would I?”
As soon as he was alone, Jarrod turned off the lights in the loft and stretched out in his chair. On impulse, he reached over and turned on the radio to another blues number. It wasn’t the same song, but it helped capture mental images of the last half hour. He reached orgasm recalling his head on Brett’s shoulder, arms around one another, groins joined.

Brett got the the male lead, and Ms. Atherton built the show around him. He was by far the best dancer in the troupe, and the drama coach simply used the female lead as a prop in the difficult numbers, putting her to the side, tapping her bare leg seductively while Brett danced his heart out. It worked.
This show was different from any Jarrod had worked on before. By the end of rehearsal each night, he was exhausted, and the actual performances would be worse. He moved constantly, changing spots, blending colors, slipping a filter in here and out there. And then there was the special lighting that sent bursts of color across the sets, at times only inky black curtains against which his lights created the scenes. Several times at the end of rehearsal Jarrod saw Brett glance up and smile. Jarrod waved back, pleased by the acknowledgment, wanting desperately for the handsome young man to come up, but realizing they were both too tired to cope.
The cast took a one-day break before final dress rehearsal, and that afternoon Jarrod noticed the rope he used to climb into the loft was jerking and swinging wildly. He peered over the edge to see Brett struggling about to haul himself hand-over-hand. More than once, he though Brett would fall, but the dancer doggedly kept at it until he was within reach. Jarrod dragged him the rest of the way over the ledge. Brett lay gasping on the floor.
“Dumb.” Jarrod sighed. “That’s all we need, our star breaking a leg before opening night.”
“Yeah,” Brett panted. “But at… least… I did it!”
“But you’ll leave by the ladder. Or better yet, by the freight elevator.”
“Take…you up on that.” Brett struggled to a sitting position. “Damn, I’ve got the legs for it, but you don’t use them much going straight up a rope. Need to work on upper body strength, I guess.” He patted his chest. “Build this up some.”
“Looks good to me,” Jarrod said.
They spent an hour or two talking about the show, making suggestions for improvement, commenting on how the female lead had improved.
“Man, you’ve done wonders with the lights. Worthy of a Las Vegas production.”
“Naw, but it’s pretty good for an amateur effort.”
“Think you’ve gone beyond that,” Brett countered. ‘You’re something, Jarrod. Everybody says so.”
“Yeah, but nobody can agree on what!”
“You don’t mix much, do you?” Brett said in one of his chameleon changes. Lightning fast and deadly accurate.
“Naw. Usually pick one guy to buddy around with. Kind of a one man… guy,” he finished slowly. How did that sound to a straight guy?.
“Loner,” Brett said. “I can dig that. But when are we going to go dancing? June can get you a date if you don’t know a girl who likes to dance.”
“Not good enough yet. Only had one lesson.” Jarrod wasn’t sure, but he thought Brett blushed slightly.
“We’ll be too busy until this play’s over, anyway. We’ll see then, okay?” Brett said.

Oh, my! Jarrod's beginning to pant. The play's about ready to open and he hasn't made his move yet. When will he do it? Tune in again next Thursday.

Until next week.

Sight Lends Substance

dontravis.com blog post #345

We’ll continue the dreamy, ethereal mood this week with a short piece I wrote for the blog. Let me know if it strikes a chord.

SIGHT LENDS SUBSTANCE

I knew you ere I met you. With closed eyes, I clearly see the breadth of your shoulders, the flair of your ribs, the curve of your buttocks. And that face! Neither fair nor swarthy, but with golden skin unblemished by the razor’s burn. Beautiful, yet masculine. Oh, yes. How manly.
We held conversations in my head. Such wisdom from someone so young. Sparkling, intelligent, witty. I looked forward to our talks at the end of the day when the nightly news was done, and you alone shared my apartment. Delightful. Intimate. Ethereal.
As pleasant as this was, I searched for you diligently. Libraries, sports bars, soccer games, on the streets… everywhere. Each time someone moved out of my apartment complex, I waited with bated breath to see who the new tenant would be, only to be disappointed when someone totally unsuitable claimed the premises.
Over the years, I found some near-yous, some of whom were delightful; others odious. But none were genuine, so I lost interest. Perhaps I should have devoted the time and energy to develop a relationship with one or two, but they had frailties so human, they turned me off, as the saying goes. A few assignations were all I could manage. One, an altogether acceptable young man, more intrigued than the rest, hung on longer than most. But eventually, I drove him away because he wasn’t you.
I saw you today. The apartment in the building next to mine had gone vacant. I watched without hope as a stream of possibles entered and left with the complex’s rental agent. I must have been out when she showed you the apartment, because you had made yourself at home before I saw you shirtless on the patio that faces mine. My flesh crawled at that first sight, and my breath came in gasps. You were he! The man of my dreams. The specter who’d been with me all these years, my ideal. My David. And the sight of you lent you substance.
Careful watching showed no roommate. No visitors at all. I learned your routine and synchronized mine so far as my job allowed. Fortunately, I did most of my work from home. Medical billing is tedious but profitable.

On the third day after the new tenant moved in, I timed my departure to coincide with his and introduced myself as we met on the sidewalk.
“Hi. I’m Lynn Proctor, your neighbor with the opposing patio.”
“Hi, Mr. Proctor, I’ve seen you out there a couple of times. My name’s Hank Warton.”
His grip was firm and encompassing. Hank. A manly name for such a graceful form.
“Everyone calls me Lynn,” I responded.
We paused long enough for me to learn he was an engineer working at a downtown firm, was single, and had moved here from Washington state. Then I asked why he chose Albuquerque for his new home.
“Beth… my fiancée,” he replied. “She took a job with an architectural firm here.” He chuckled. “Funny thing, I beat her here. She won’t move from Seattle until the middle of next month.”
Downer. But at least I had five weeks or so to develop a relationship. And I worked at it hard. I wouldn’t let go of my paragon without a battle. I introduced him to my favorite sports bar, where he was a great hit talking baseball like a pro with the guys. I noticed he drank a bit too much and got a little edgy before the evening was over. Watching his pecs play as he drove us home, thrust such frailties from my mind.
I unlimbered my tennis racket when I learned he liked the game and managed to hold my own. In fact, I beat him about as much as he beat me, which caused his shoulders to tense. During the second set, we argued over whether a ball that hit beyond the line was fair or foul. I gave in when the discussion started to get heated. My building resentment dropped away as we showered alongside one another in the club.
Then came the day when Hank rapped on my patio door after work one day. He was dressed in shorts and a snug polo shirt that showed his six pack to full advantage.
“Whatcha up to tonight?” he asked after I opened the screen.
“Nothing. Unless you want to go to the bar.”
“Nah, don’t feel like it. Just thought maybe we could hang.”
My heart skipped a beat. Lord, would my yesteryear dreams finally come true? Whoa there, Lynn. Don’t rush things. Let him set the pace. “Sounds good to me. How about a drink.”
“Scotch if you have it.”
“Rocks or neat?”
“What kind?”
“Laphroaig ten-year-old or Johnnie Walker Blenders’,” I said.
“Laphroaig neat.”
We settled in my living room with our drinks. He sat with his legs splayed, which about sent me over the moon. The hair on his legs was lighter than the dark brown on his head. Not thick, not intrusive… just sexy. Had he noticed me giving him the once over? Probably hard not to. I took refuge in my drink.
We talked about his work and his firm a bit, but I had the feeling he wasn’t saying what he came to say. By the time we finished our second drink, I’d had enough.
“You’ve obviously got something on your mind. What is it? Spit it out.”
He speared me with big, brown, expressive eyes, sending shivers up and down my spine.
“I don’t want you to think I run around on Beth all the time. But….” He gave a great sigh. “But I’m getting hard up. She’s been delayed by two weeks, and I’m not sure I can wait. Do you know any women who might accommodate us?”
I gazed at his smooth, slightly irregular, and unbearably handsome features and blurted the first thing that came to mind. “Hank, we don’t need any women. I can give you what you’re looking for.”
His crooked smile brought me to my knees in front of him. He permitted my touch, cooperated as I stripped him, and moaned as I ministered to him. I took my time and made it so good for him I thought he was having a fit during orgasm.
Afterward, he flexed his broad shoulders and stretched his arms to the ceiling. Oh, man… sex on steroids. A moment later, he rose, and performed a striptease in reverse. As he smoothed the shirt over his trim belly, he gave me a sated look.
“Thanks, guy. I needed that. See you around.”
My mouth dropped open. “Are… are you going to just leave me here like this? I have needs, too, you know.”
His eyes widened. “Hey, guy, if that’s what you want, go find yourself a queer.”
As he strolled with manly grace through the patio door and stepped over the fence to his place, I almost forgave him his callousness.

I knew you ere I met you. With closed eyes, I clearly see the breadth of your shoulders, the flair of your ribs, the curve of your buttocks. And that face!
I’ve met some near-yous, of course. But never the real you. I’ll continue my search because sight lends substance to us all. But in the meantime, I’ll live with the insubstantial you in my head as consolation.

I’ll wager that at one time or the other in our lives, we’ve all encountered a situation similar to this… regardless of our sexual orientation. If you want to tell me about yours, email me at don.travis@aol.com.
